Brokeback Mountain broke the taboo against gay cowboys. UCSC is about to break the taboo against gay farmers. This Saturday, the school will host its second annual Queer Farmer Field Day at the campus’s 25-acre farm. Its goal is to raise awareness of the queer farmer community and to promote sustainable agriculture as an employment opportunity for the GLBT community. The event will include demonstrations of low-waste, high-yield farming techniques, bee-keeping and pickling; a tour of the organic crops being grown there and a potluck dinner. Guests will be able to hang out, sip pink lavender lemonade, listen to live music and watch films related to gay farming made available by the Queer Farmer Film Project.
