First Amendment rights don’t apply to rewritten lease agreements

The recent furor over the Nazi flags hanging in the windows of a Pacific Avenue apartment complex has caused the owners to revise their lease agreements with their tenants. Barry Swenson Builders, which owns The Residences, is now banning its occupants from displaying anything but blinds in windows facing the street. The decision has earned the owners the praise of two of Santa Cruz’s prominent Jewish residents: Rabbi Yochanan Friedman of Chabad by the Sea, and Mayor Mike Rotkin.
