“There’s no more swine flu vaccine in Santa Cruz and Watsonville until further notice.” That was the gist of a statement issued by the Santa Cruz County Health Services Agency on Wednesday. The statement comes just days after President Obama declared the H1N1 virus to be a national emergency and called on the public to take the appropriate precautions, including vaccines.

Beth Landes, Spokeswoman for the County Health Department, said that an additional 1,000 vaccines are expected to arrive in the county in time for its November clinic. Priority will be given to pregnant women, the family of infants under six months of age, healthcare workers, emergency responders, and people with medical conditions that make them susceptible to the disease. To date, some 28,640 in Santa Cruz County have received the vaccine, including 5,000 since October 19.
