Despite California’s reputation for crunchy clean, granola lifestyles, almost one out of every three teens living here is either overweight or at risk of becoming so. That could soon change though, thanks to a new bill proposed by Representative Sam Farr (D-Carmel) that would introduce salad bars and fresh foods to school cafeterias across the nation.

Among the bill’s supporters is Jamie Smith, food services manager for Santa Cruz city schools. According to him, about 1,600 children receive breakfast and lunch in school for free or at reduced costs, but fresh produce is often too expensive for schools to incorporate in their menus. If the bill passes, all that remains is a way to convince kids to actually eat their veggies. Read more at the Contra Costa Times.
