When the city’s Planning Commission meets this Thursday, it will decide whether to approve construction of a new hotel off Mission Street on the far west side of town, beyond Western Drive. The lot, originally zoned for industrial use, was selected for a hotel because of its proximity to UC Santa Cruz. If the hotel is approved, the plan will be brought before City Council. While the new hotel is expected to generate some $207,000 in revenue for Santa Cruz, locals have questioned whether the city’s priority should be to build new hotels, especially since so many existing hotels are in need of upgrading.
