State Treasurer Bill Lockyer announced a move Aug. 4 to improve University of California infrastructure across eight campuses bysetting up $200 million in bond funds. The Santa Cruz Sentinel reports that UC-Santa Cruz will receive $64 million, which will go toward the new Biomedical Sciences & Engineering Facility.

Campus spokesman Barry Shiller says building the new facility will stimulate the local economy and create jobs. “During such a tough time for our local economy, we’re gratified that a portion of the state funds supporting the construction jobs will be invested right here in Santa Cruz,” he said.

The 92,000-square-foot Biomedical Sciences & Engineering Facility will house the university’s new molecular biology, environmental toxicology and stem cell research labs. The facility’s proposal created a wave of controversy in November of 2007 when tree sitters set up camp in the Science Hill redwoods for 13 months to protest the expansion of the university into the second-growth redwood forest.
