Interim police chief Kevin Vogel, 47, has been named the new chief of police for the city of Santa Cruz. He’s been serving as interim chief since the retirement of Howard Skerry this autumn. Vogel, a 23-year veteran of the SCPD, has served in every rank in the department. He was the only candidate from within the local force, and when it was decided to keep the search internal, he became the shoe-in candidate.
The only question regarding Vogel’s selection was his wife, Beverly, who works for the police department as an administrative assistant. It was finally decided that this would not pose a problem as long as he avoids conducting her performance evaluation.
Vogel will be sworn in on Dec. 15. His total compensation package will be $192,400, including a base salary of $184,152. Read more at KSBW and the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
