The Police Department had some dire news for members of the Santa Cruz Neighbors group. The 60 participants in a public meeting were told that Pogonip was the county’s “meth capital,” with some shocking figures to back that up. A single policeman could arrest between 10 and 30 drugs users in Pogonip during a single shift. The meeting was initiated by the Santa Cruz Neighbors, who wanted to learn more about meth addiction in the county. In addition to the status report, they heard from representatives of the Santa Cruz Meth Project, which educated about the dangers of meth use, and were given hints about what to look for when they suspect someone of using the drug. Deputy Police Chief Patty Sapone warned the concerned residents that while meth was a problem in itself, it could also lead to even bigger problems such as domestic violence and gang wars. It was a message the residents took to heart. Read more at the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
