Just two years ago, recruiters across the United States had to beg people to join the military. Then came the Great Recession, and young men and women found it harder and harder to find themselves a job.

Recruiters say that there is a surge in the number of people seeking to serve in one of the military’s five branches: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. For some it offer job security—given the need for trained men and women, the military is not laying anyone off. There are also the benefits that many jobs no longer offer, such as comprehensive health insurance for the new recruits and their families. Even university students are joining, in an effort to earn themselves a career without the burden of college debt hounding them. If they agree to serve, the military will assume their tuition fees. “The way the economy is, people come to the military for help,” says Navy Petty Officer Leszek Romero.
