People passing the St. George Residences on Pacific Avenue looked up last night expecting to be shocked by the two Nazi flags hanging in one unit’s windows. Instead they saw the Stars and Stripes and the Union Jack, the banners of two nations that helped defeat the Nazis 65 years ago. The apartment’s tenant has not agreed to speak with the press, and so there is no explanation as to why he decided to replace the offensive flags—or hang them in the first place. The only clue comes from a neighbor, who says that the flag-owner is an “amiable guy,” who did not mean to harm anyone. He added that he is “very eclectic. Sort of a student of antiquity.”
One can only wonder if the Hammer and Sickle, under which the Soviets fought in World War II, will appear next in his window. Read more at NBC Bay Area.
