At the Santa Cruz Full Moon Music Festival this Saturday night, that bright lunar light in the sky might not be the only moon to see. The two-day music festival this weekend takes place at the clothing-optional Lupin Lodge—which means there may be a few bright fleshy moons on display.
Was this match-up of lunar calendars and naked rears just a coincidence? Or were organizers intentionally being, um, cheeky?
“I think it’s hysterical,” laughs festival co-producer Jennie Kay, who has long organized events at Lupin Lodge for Half Moon Bay’s Burning Man community.
So are people supposed to be naked?
“It’s a clothing-optional resort, and we strongly stress the word ‘optional,'” Kay explains. “It’s about an environment where people are comfortable being themselves, whether clothed or unclothed.”
Kay says the overall idea of the festival is to take the principles and values of Burning Man and “bring in local music and add some commerce, which is not part of Burning Man culture.”
The bare facts: The Santa Cruz Mountain Full Moon Music Festival is a two-night campout and music fest hidden high up in the redwoods. Musical acts include reggae and world electronic artists. Organizers are scheduling free workshops, and vendors will set up booths to sell their wares.
The music lineup includes Bay Area favorites and world-stage performers like Seedless, Janaka Selekta, Junior Toots, Audible Mainframe, The Devastators, Cholorophil, Smokin’ Roots Crew, Inhale, Michael Annotti and Projekt S.E.E.R. DJs Amar and Dragonfly will spin electronic music sets. Kay expects some 20 artists total to be part of the the lineup.
Visitors can pick up a Saturday- or Sunday-only tickets or purchase a camping pass for Friday and Saturday nights, which includes admission to both days of music.
Kay says Full Moon Fest will feature an art and craft fair where vendors will sell jewelry, crafts and massage services in over 50 booths. A physician will conduct evaluations for medical cannabis recommendations. Workshops throughout both days will include yoga, meditation and belly dancing.
There’s more than just music and crafts. Lupin Lodge is a private, family-friendly, clothing-optional resort hidden up in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Famed for its weekend naked volleyball tournaments, the property is adorned with several of sculptor and Lupin Lodge owner Lori Kay Stout’s large-scale sculptures and sits on 110 acres of hiking trails and sport facilities. For food there’s a restaurant and a communal kitchen, too. Nudity is required only in the pool or spas.
