People Power director Micah Posner announced his decision to run for Santa Cruz City Council this morning, April 13, citing his knowledge of city politics and his understanding of social movements. Posner, who will be leaving his post at the alternative transportation-based organization on July 1, says he knows how to effect change by combining those experiences.

“I want to take those skills and apply them to larger issues that are really important to me, not just cycling,” Posner says. “In my opinion the role of the city council is to make visions happen. I've been working on that in transportation, but I’d like to work on a lot of other things that are important.”

Posner, who plans to accept the city’s voluntary campaign finance limits, says he’s learned more about education from having a family and more about his community from being a part of the Neighbors of Lower Ocean, his local neighborhood association.

“There’s a lot of work to be done, and I’d like to be part of it,” Posner says.

I am interested in how Posner intends to make Santa Cruz city government more transparent and accountable to the citizenry.

Will he help break down the good old boy network of Santa Cruz city government?

Is he for citizen oversight of the SCPD using a strong independent police auditor like San Jose has?

Will he help enact a sunshine ordinance for citizens to more easily gain knowledge about the inner workings of city government, to be better informed?

Will he help replace City Attorney John Barisone with an attorney who doesn’t profit from pursuing frivolous lawsuits using city funds?
