Brian Lavelle of Los Gatos and Erika Erickson of Berkeley took first in men’s and women’s divisions, respectively, of the Santa Cruz Triathlon.
Brian Lavelle, 36, of Los Gatos was the winner of this weekend’s Santa Cruz Triathlon. The runner-up was Eric Clarkson, 29, of Santa Cruz. Lavelle finished with a time of 1:54:20. Clarkson was close behind at 1:56:47. The grueling competition consists of a 1.5 kilometer swim, a 10 kilometer run, and a 40 kilometer bike ride.
Lavelle comes from a family of triathletes, with a long history of competing in the event. He not only won this year’s Santa Crus International Triathlon competition just last month in August, but so did his wife, Becky Lavelle, who won in the women’s division. Crossing the generation gap, his father, Timothy Lavelle, 64, came in second at this event in the men’s 60-64 division. The winner of this year’s women’s division was Erika Erickson, 25, of Berkeley, who finished with a time of 2:11:13.
