It could be much worse, but a new report by the Surface Transportation Policy Partnership named Santa Cruz as California’s 23rd most dangerous metropolitan area for pedestrians. The figure is based on the seven pedestrian deaths that occurred in Santa Cruz in 2007, a sizeable number, but significantly less than the 47 pedestrian deaths that occurred in San Jose in 2007 and 2008 or the the 136 fatalities in San Francisco in that time. The report also claimed that Santa Cruz spent less than $1 annually per pedestrian and cyclist. Read more at the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
