By late last night, about 300 firefighters were battling a blaze that broke out north of Bonny Doon, in the area of Jamison Creek and Empire Grade roads. The fire, which broke out at 7:00 pm, had already spread to hundreds of acres. Shortly after midnight, the fire had spread over more than 2000 acres, and the residents of 250 homes were evacuated to Davenport and Santa Cruz. The major concern among firefighters now is that many of the homes are off the grid and the inhabitants could not be contacted. Altogether, some 1,500 people have already been evacuated. Firefighters have been brought in from Monterey, Santa Clara, San Benito, and even Santa Barbara counties, to assist the Santa Cruz team, many of whom have been on duty since 8:00 am Wednesday. The nearby Lockheed Martin Space Systems campus is being used as a base to combat the fire. Read more at KCBS, ABC 7, KTVU and Santa Cruz Sentinel.
