Police are now combing through video tapes from security cameras both inside and outside the 7-11 in an effort to identify the assailants, described as Latinos aged 18-25. One drawback they face is that an exterior camera in an apartment building facing the shop was out of order at the time of the crime. Read more at the Santa Cruz Sentinel.

There is never a reason to hate. There are ways to turn this around, even though this poor kid lost his life. Anyone would sympathize with him and his family. But locking people up and punishing and banning them wont fix things. Santa Cruz needs a youth empowerment group for these teen gangs to teach them how to get off the streets and become responsible people. It has to be appealing to them, offer them jobs and training, show them they can be somebody and dont have to face the hardships their parents have: picking berries for $6 an hour. Help them see another way. If you came from poverty and lived in a town where people hate you, you might understand what can result from it. I dont defend these gang actions in any way, but other cities have turned these problems around. It takes caring about people, all people, to make things better. Hate will only make it worse.
