Local School Districts Strapped

State Superintendent Jack O’Connell warns that three school districts in Santa Cruz County may not be able to meet their future financial obligations due to cuts to public education. The Pajaro Valley Unified District and Santa Cruz City Elementary and High School districts have all received qualified certification because they may not meet their obligations in this or the coming two academic years. With the number of schools with qualified certification up by 17 percent, O’Connell has called on the state government to lower the threshold of approval for parcel taxes to 55 percent as proposed by State Senator Joe Simitian (D-Palo Alto). The money raised could then be used to bolster the local school districts. Read more at KCBA.
