Despite the tuition hikes, despite the protests, UCSC is still considered to be one of the 100 Best Values in Public Education anywhere in the country, at least according to Kiplinger’s Personal Finance. It ranked 68th in the nation in-state, but significantly behind other UC schools, including UC San Diego (11th), UCLA (13th), UC Berkeley (18th), UC Irvine (20th), and UC Santa Barbara (29th). For out-of-state costs, the school ranked 74th.
The Kiplinger rating is based on a combination of academics and affordability. It considers academic quality, cost and financial aid available for both in-state and out-of-state students. The biggest bargain nationwide is the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, whose in-state total costs are $9,000 less than UCSC. Read more at the Business Journal and Kiplinger’s.
