On Tuesday a jury found Kenneth Clamp guilty in the July 2009 killing of Elias Sorokin. A second defendant, Adam Spencer Hunt of Watsonville, was found not guilty. Both men were charged with murder. Clamp was also charged with robbery and Hunt was charged with involuntary manslaughter. Stewart Skuba, 33, the prime suspect in the killing, is scheduled to face trial in early October.
According to prosecutors, Skuba and Hunt conspired to attack Sorokin so that they could steal 10 pounds of marijuana from him. Sorokin was knocked unconscious in the scuffle, but Hunt left before he died. He could yet be sentenced for his role in the robbery and faces anything from probation to five years in prison.
Clamp arrived later and helped Skuba finish off Sorokin and dispose of the body, prosecutors said. Clamp faces 25 years to life, though he could make a deal to reduce his sentence by revealing the location of Sorokin’s body. Speaking outside the courtroom, Clamp’s mother said that her son should be absolved from the murder charge because Sorokin was already dead by the time he arrived. Read more at Santa Cruz Sentinel.
