What to do about the Veteran’s Memorial Hall? An announcement.html that the Santa Cruz County Veterans Memorial Hall is closing indefinitely came down abruptly on the afternoon of Thursday, January 21, forcing the groups that used the building to scurry to find alternative housing. The closure was ordered after the county determined the building to be unsafe in the event of an earthquake. Now this claim is being challenged by the one group that has not found another home, the Veterans Council of Santa Cruz County. They argue that their engineers have found the building to be structurally sound, and have filed a lawsuit to be allowed to reoccupy it.

Santa Cruz County spokeswoman Dinah Phillips says that the building remains hazardous, “especially when there’s a lot of seismic activity right now.” Whether that really poses a threat or not will only be known next. That is when a more comprehensive report on the building’s compliance with safety regulations is due to be released.
