Crowds will be gathering opposite Cowell Beach and the Municipal Wharf today for the groundbreaking ceremony for the National Marine Sanctuary Exploration Center, a project that has been in the works for the past five years. The $15 million project is a joint venture of the city and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Construction is scheduled to begin this autumn. When it is completed, some 200,000 people are expected to visit the site annually.
According to Santa Cruz officials, no funding for the project is coming from the city’s general fund. The city did, however, donate the property, covering just under an acre. The value of the land is estimated at $2 million. The center will also have to find about $3 million in funding to cover the cost of the exhibitions. Read more at the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
