Greece was in the news this weekend, not only because bankers around the world were watching to see if the country defaults, but also because Californians from across the Bay Area gathered in the Santa Cruz agora for the 31st Annual Greek Festival. Here was a chance to get a taste of Greece, and as anyone who’s ever been to Greece or even seen My Big Fat Greek Wedding knows, there’s no such thing as a little taste of Greece.

The event took place near The Prophet Elias Greek Orthodox Church on Church Street. It was a special event for the church as well, since it has just welcomed a new priest, the Reverend Dennis Vierling, who arrived here from South Carolina in August.
There was plenty of spanakopita and loukoumades to munch on, washed down with ouzo and Greek beer—and lemonade for the kids. A band played traditional Greek music while a local folklore troupe, Elliniki Klironomia , got up to dance. “Dance? Did you say dance?”
Proceeds from the event went to benefit the church. Read more at the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
