Local law enforcement agencies looked to step up efforts against gangs with the latest operation.

A coalition of city and county police forces from across Santa Cruz launched a new crackdown against gangs this weekend, arresting eight suspects and contacting fifteen. The arrests were made for narcotics violations, outstanding warrants, and parole violations. Deputy Police Chief Rick Martinez said that, “We periodically do these types of gang suppression operations to address increases in gang crime in our community.

According to the SCPD news release, the participating agencies included, in addition to the SCPD, the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office, the Watsonville Police Department, the Capitola Police Department, and the Santa Cruz County Anti Crime Team (SCCACT). Each of these areas has been subject to a wave of gang-related violence recently, culminating in the shooting death of Carl Reimer in Santa Cruz. Martinez decline to answer whether the police had any more information about the murder.
