Like pull-tabs and 8-tracks, free parking will soon be a thing of the past in downtown Santa Cruz. The parking garage at Cedar and Church streets and the lot at Cedar and Cathcart streets will begin charging 50 cents an hour, or $5 a day, to park in them. Each facility will be equipped with automated pay stations, and users will be able to pay for as much as three days at a time with cash, their credit card or a city-issued ParkCard. People using ParkCards will eventually be able to get a refund on any time not used. The new fees are expected to raise $355,000 in revenue, which will be used to cover operating costs and make improvements to the facilities.Read more at the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
