Rescue efforts were too late to save a raven that got tangled up in abandoned fishing wire and caught in a cypress tree at Lighthouse Field State Beach. The bird was first reported to wildlife officials on Thursday, but by the time the fire department, Pacific Gas and Electric, and a tree company arrived on the scene the following day, the bird was already dead.

Duane Titus of WildRescue said that events such as this are “entirely preventable. “If people would just pick up stray fishing line or pick up kite strings, it would save a vast number of birds.” Read more at KNBC.
