Debra Collins, 58, was found alive by neighbors in the Santa Cruz Mountains early Saturday morning, Dec. 4. She had left her Felton home on Nov. 28 to go for a run and was reported missing on Nov. 30. A neighbor and his son who saw the fliers reporting her missing set out on a search for her and found her in a ravine in Fall Creek State Park.
According to rescuers, she was delirious, dehydrated and suffering from hypothermia when she was found. It has also been reported that she suffered a broken ankle. It took rescue crews five hours to extract her from the area because of the rugged terrain.
Neighbors now report that the sheriff’s department declined to search for Collins after she went missing, explaining that she was most likely dead. They later told Central Coast News that they “don’t have a starting point,” but this was disputed by neighbors, who were familiar with the trails that Collins usually followed during her frequent runs.
She is reported to be in stable condition at Dominican Hospital, where she celebrated her 59th birthday on Sunday. Read more at KSBW, Fox 35 and the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
