There’s something very antiquated about Santa Cruz County’s public library system. Perhaps it’s that books still contain pockets with date cards in their front covers, or perhaps its because every one of its branches needs repairs. With a budget of only $11.3 million, it will be impossible to bring the system of public libraries up to par in the coming year.

Library board members will be tackling these problems at a meeting to be held tonight. Board Chairwoman Barbara Gorson anticipates that this will be the first of many tough conversations in the weeks and months ahead about what to prioritize and, potentially, where to cut back. What will not be discussed, however, is whether to close any of the 10 branches. That idea was rejected last summer because of intense public opposition. Read more at the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
