Two passers-by become heroes before anyone had even called 911

A 77-year-old woman who lives on Laurel Street has plenty to be thankful for. She was trapped in her apartment surrounded by flames, and two passerby happened to notice that there was smoke pouring out of her window. With little concern for their own safety, they ran up the stairs and pulled her to safety, then searched for any other residents who might be caught in the building. What was remarkable was that all this happened before anyone even called 911 to notify the fire department.

According to the Fire Department, the building had been burning for as long as ten minutes before they were notified. Captain Robert Young said that he saw the two young rescuers, but only managed to get the name of one of them. The other simply disappeared after his job was done. All that Charles Daly, another resident of the building who was notified by the two men of the fire, could say was that the two anonymous heroes were “great guys.” Read More at the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
