James Durbin and friends debuted their new band on Thursday before millions of eager television fans. The band, which consists of Casey Abrams (bass), Paul McDonald (guitar), and Stefano Legano (keyboards), as well as Durbin, performed their own rendition of the classic Wings hit “Band on the Run” in the lead-up to the announcement as to which of them would be booted off American Idol. During the song, each of the four contestants had a chance to show off his unique vocal talents.
Unfortunately for the band, their 15 minutes of fame almost got reduced to about 30 seconds, when Ryan Seacrest announced that one of them was in the bottom three that night. With two people going home last night, that could have been the end of their long and winding road. Obviously, Durbin wouldn’t get booted. Nor would Casey Abrams, who had just been saved by the judges last week. Stefano Legano is Durbin’s close friend and roommate in the mansion—now hotel—where the contestants live (the move to a hotel occurred last week after it was discovered that the mansion was haunted. They heard a lot of shrieking, but for the skeptics, that could have just been Jacob Lusk practicing).
That left McDonald. Even embroidering more roses on his white suit couldn’t save him from Idol oblivion.
Thankfully, a concerted effort by the Paul McDonald Fan Club saved him from obscurity. Thia Megia and Naima Adedapo went home instead, so the band lives on to play another week. As for the two contestants who got booted, they could always find work as the Durbinettes, James Durbin’s backup singers.
