The excitement began on Sunday morning, when families living along the cliff near the Boardwalk trestle heard desperate calls for help. A woman had fallen off the cliff and was trapped on a rocky outcrop, clutching at nearby plants, about 40 feet above the San Lorenzo River.
The rescue team took a two-pronged approach. One firefighter rappelled down the cliff, while a lifeguard swam across the river to assist the woman as she came down. When the firefighters reached her they found her to be drunk. Rather than get her back up the cliff, they put her on a rescue board and swam her back across the river.
Once rescued, she was treated for her injuries but refused to give any information about how she ended up halfway down the cliff. All that they were able to find out was that she was visiting from San Jose, and apparently lost her party at some point.
After receiving basic first aid, the woman was taken to Dominican Hospital, but she tried to escape, wearing only her hospital robe. She was caught and brought back in for observation. Read more at the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
