Anyone who wants to learn the mechanics of throwing a golf disc or maybe even meet a professional who does just that for a living might find Saturday to be their lucky day. The city of Santa Cruz Parks & Recreation Department opened a 9-hole disc golf course on the former site of the Occupy Santa Cruz village Thursday and is throwing a party to introduce the sport.

The focus of the Disc Golf Festival at San Lorenzo Park will be on teaching people how to play the popular sport..html And a nice mix of outdoor activities should make the 10am to 3pm festival a perfect fit for a warm day in July (which city officials by they way have renamed “Parks and Recreation Month”).

The free July 21 event is being cosponsored by the DeLaveaga Disc Golf Club and the city’s parks and recreation department. There will be activities for children, and attendants are welcome to try their hand at setting the record for the park’s new disc golf course. There will also be a 3pm “Ace Run” during which the pros will try to ace all nine holes on the course.
