Police have identified the victim of Monday’s fatal crash on Highway 17 as Ana Luz Barajas, 48. Barajas, who lived in Santa Cruz, worked at the Sutter Maternity and Surgery Center as an endoscopy and sterile-processing technician.
The crash occurred shortly after 3pm on Monday, when Eric Rsel Weers drove onto Highway 17 going in the wrong direction. He later told police that the crash was intentional, though his victim was selected at random. There was no evidence that he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, but not motive for the crime has been released. He will be charged with murder, assault with a deadly weapon, vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and driving the wrong way on a divided highway. He is currently being held in lieu of $1 million bail.
