It’s been a violent year for Santa Cruz County, and there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight. On Friday afternoon, the county had its tenth homicide when Juan Carlos Garcia was found dead in his car in the parking lot of Soquel High School. The window had been shattered and he suffered trauma to the head, though the precise cause of death will only be determined after an autopsy scheduled for today.

On Saturday, police arrested Federico Lozoya Castillo, 44, for an unrelated drug charge and later named him as a suspect in Garcia’s death. Though no motive for the murder or reason for the suspicion has been given, Castillo is being held in the county jail pending payment of $1 million bail. Read more at Santa Cruz Sentinel.
