It may be the most prestigious bicycle race in the United States. Even Lance Armstrong participated in it this year. But let’s face it. The Amgen Tour is no Tour de France, and despite its high profile thanks to Armstrong, it is not a major spectator sport, especially when races can last for days on end. Nevertheless, Santa Cruz City Council voted to host a stage of the Amgen Tour again this year, and is now anxiously awaiting to hear whether the city will be selected to host a stage again.
The problem is the cost. Earlier this year, advocates estimated that it could cost the city as much as $145,000, not counting the overtime hours for staff and police. At a time when cities throughout California are facing a severe budget crunch, this can be a strain on the city. Supporters argue, however, that it is a small investment considering the nationwide exposure Santa Cruz will get as a desirable tourist location, and it could already start to bring in tourist dollars during the event itself.
Supporters have also promised that this will not cost the city a dime, because they will raise all the necessary funds from local businesses. While that may be harder this year due to the recession, at least they have till May to raise the money. Last year’s race was held in February. Read more at the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
