This summer, when Santa Cruz planning commissioners rejected plans to build a new Fairfield Inn on the Westside, off Highway 1, they said that the design was “cheap” and “ugly,”.html hardly the way they wanted to greet tourists about to enter Surf City. But at least one councilmember is considering approval over planning commissioners’ objections. The new inn could raise $207,000 annually in hotel taxes, and City Councilman Mike Rotkin says that there may not be any other options for the lot in the foreseeable future.
With this in mind, the City Council takes up the issue at its meeting this coming Tuesday. The neighbors, however, are not too happy with the idea. They would prefer something smaller, and have suggested ideas for a new green industry or even a coffee shop. But as Rotkin pointed out, that may not be feasible, and “unless the building is spectacularly ugly,” he sees no reason to oppose it. Read more at the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
