Santa Cruz is getting ready to host the end of Stage 3 of the Amgen Tour of California tomorrow. Thousands of people are expected to attend the event, which is bringing together some of the world’s leading cyclists in a race for the finish line at Beach Street and Riverside Avenue. Nevertheless, the city is still looking for 100 additional volunteers to serve as race marshals.
Though the race is expected to end between 3:20pm and 4pm, there will be events for the entire family throughout the course of the day. Live music will begin on the Boardwalk at 11:15am.
Among the most touching events of the day will be the “Breakaway Mile.” Hundreds of cancer patients and survivors, their families, and their caregivers are expected to walk the one mile along the race route to draw attention to the fight against cancer. It is a tribute to Lance Armstrong, perhaps the world’s most famous cyclist, who survived a bout of testicular cancer, and went on to win the Tour de France a record seven consecutive times. Armstrong himself will also be participating in the Amgen Tour. Read more at the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
