Cities to Brown: 'OOOH, back off, ya long-fingered varmint!'

Cities across California are worried about Gov. Jerry Brown intending to dip into their redevelopment funds to cover the budget deficit. At its meeting today, Santa Cruz City Council is planning to join the fray with a resolution condemning Brown’s plan.

Mayor Ryan Coonerty says the plan is “unconstitutional. The voters have made it clear where they want this money to go,” he says, “and it’s not for the state to balance their budget on our backs.” The problem is even deeper than that, according to City Manager Martin Bernal. “This is a way that essentially cuts the city’s development,” he warns, “at a time when we need to be doing more than ever.”

Among the projects threatened by the governor are the Monterey Bay Sanctuary Exploration Center and an upgrade to the Municipal Wharf. Read more at KSBW.
