Lorrie Brewer, 50, who has recorded the discussions and decisions of Santa Cruz City Council since 2008, has resigned her position effective the end of this month. After more than two decades working with City Council, Brewer will be leaving Santa Cruz for Mountain View, where she will also serve as City Clerk.

Brewer first began working with the city after the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989. She originally applied for a temporary position in order to pay for Christmas gifts. She began in the Parks and Recreation Department and then moved on to Public Works. She was appointed Deputy City Clerk in 1999.

In addition to her work for the city, Brewer served on the board of the United Way and Leadership Santa Cruz. She was also an avid softball player and coach for the Usual Suspects team. This may have brought her into conflict with City Councilman Don Lane, a member of the Base Cadets softball team, but their competition was limited to the playing field. At work she was known for her ability to remain neutral and balanced even during the most heated council meetings. Read more at Santa Cruz Sentinel.
