A 2,000-gallon water leak on River Street brought traffic to a standstill yesterday at the intersection of Highway 1 and Highway 9. “It’s an old pipe and it’s not unusual this time of year,” said David McNair of the Santa Cruz Water Department. But that was no consolation for hundreds of drivers who spent hours trapped in their cars, literally inching along. While commuter grumbled, the staff at nearby Costco was happy. Customers were trapped in the store, some for as many as six hours, and according to one eyewitness, police were letting people into the parking lot but not letting them out. Some took advantage of their extra time in the store to start their Christmas shopping early, but for most it was another nightmare caused by eroding infrastructure.
