Almost half of the Pajaro Valley Unified School District’s students eat a school lunch every day. Breakfast, however, is a different story, and many students start the day without getting any food. In an effort to buck this trend, the district applied for $27,000 in state grants in grants to enhance its breakfast program, and include more variety in it. Among the foods that could be offered are waffles, muffins, smoothies and yogurt.

But that doesn’t solve a second problem—too many kids don’t have time to eat at home as they rush to school, and when they get there, they don’t have time to spend in the cafeteria. One solution that has been proposed is a “grab and go” program, where students take food to eat at their desks. There is no word as yet as to how teachers might respond.
