For Santa Cruz students, Boomeria Castle in the Santa Cruz Mountains was little less than Disneyland. Built by Preston Boomer in the 1950s, it was a Mecca for students who loved science and the arts—a safe place for them to perform experiments, attend music camp, or participate in film projects. But the castle was damaged in the recent storm when a 108-foot Douglas fir fell on it. Authorities now say it will take at least two days to remove the tree, and only then will they be able to assess the real damage. But the good news is that in all the decades, Boomeria has withstood attack by slingshots, catapults, cannons, and bombs (all built by students, of course), qand it is pretty hard to believe that a simple storm will have brought it to its knees.
