Around noon on Wednesday 10-to-12-foot waves brought about 15 brave surfers to Steamer Lane. Waves were expected to reach up to 20-feet as a giant swell headed south from Alaska down the California coast, bringing around an inch of rain to Santa Cruz along with it.
About to grab their boards and hit the water, Rick Ekstein and Michelle Reeves from Orange County said they are on a surf trip down the coast and are excited to see the waves, though they would likely stick to smaller variety closer to shore.
“It’s the biggest waves I’ve ever seen here,” said Ekstein. “It’s a little peaky, but I can’t wait to get in there.”
