The weather was perfect on Sunday for the city’s 28th Annual Triathlon. Several hundred athletes competed in the grueling competition, which included a 1.5 kilometer swim around the Municipal Wharf, a 40-kilometer bike race to Davenport and back, and a 10-kilometer run down West Cliff Drive. The weather was kind and the sea was calm as the athletes set off to the cheers of an enthusiastic crowd.

Proceeds from the event benefit a variety of local athletics programs, including programs in high schools and Cabrillo College. Last year, over $50,000 was raised.

The winner of the men’s event was James Duff, 33, of San Francisco, who completed the course 1 hour, 48 minutes and 8 seconds. The winner of the women’s event was Tyler Stewart, 32, of Novato, who completed it in 2 hours, 5 minutes and 19 seconds. Local athlete Eric Clarkson, 28, came in second for the second year in a row. Local men also came in fourth, fifth, and sixth. Read more at the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
