The Aliberti Construction building on Swift Street has long been a popular target for Keith Haring wannabes devoted to spray-painting their way into the art world. Thanks to the efforts of Councilmember Lynn Robinson, the 20-by-130-foot wall is now a genuine art installation, featuring a mural by local artist Marvin Plummer.
Plummer, who specializes in charcoal painting, never did a mural before tackling this project for the City Arts program. The painting, which took 25 days to complete, depicts a wave crashing into Lighthouse Point. The work cost the city $16,000, with $12,000 coming from the Santa Cruz Redevelopment Agency and the remainder from local businesses and residents.
