Yesterday, Santa Cruz County’s Regional Transportation Commission approved giving $1.1 million to pave a path for pedestrians and cyclists across Arana Gulch. The entire project is expected to cost $4 million. The remaining funds are expected to come from state and local funding.

But the project still has its opponents, led by the Friends of Arana Gulch. Apart from their environmental concerns, they argue that the proposed new path would attract drug dealers, much like Pogonip does. They have challenged the Arana Gulch path in court, but lost each time, so their only hope remains with the Coastal Commission, which has the authority to waylay the project. With the unanimous approval of Regional Transportation Commission funding, however, that seems increasingly unlikely. Read more at the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
