About 7,000 years ago, a small group of people lived above Harkins Slough in Santa Cruz County. Ten years ago, workers constructing a water supply project west of Highway 1 found their remains. The artifacts will soon be housed at the Monterey Bay Archeology Archives at UC Santa Cruz.
The archive is already home to about 100 collections of artifacts from different spots around the area, dating from approximately 11,000 years ago to the Cowell lime works of the early twentieth century. But curator Diane Gifford-Gonzalez says space and resources are limited, and it may not be able to accept any new collections now. Remarkably, the archive survives on an annual budget of less than $1,400. Read more at the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
