Glenn Beck would have choked on his bile. Thursday night, a group of local anarchists met with the public at the Louden Nelson Community Center to explain their political ideology in the wake of all the bad press they’ve been getting. Anarchists have been blamed by the police for the May Day riot in downtown Santa Cruz at which local businesses were vandalized.

The speakers barely addressed the event and focused instead on the core beliefs of anarchism—the abolition of institutions of power, including the military, police, and government. This, they explained, would foster a greater sense of individualism while promoting cooperative solutions to end such pressing problems as poverty and racism. “Anarchy means living free and working cooperatively,” said John Malkin, a local preschool teacher who also hosts a show on Free Radio Santa Cruz.
