An Apple A Day …

Watsonville students will soon have a whole new range of snacks to choose from at the end of the school day. For four days a week, teens from the Jovenes Sanos youth organization will operate stands outside the schools, where students can buy a cup of
berries for just 50 cents. The berries are donated by Driscoll’s, and the proceeds will be used to fund additional projects to promote healthy food choices and combat childhood obesity. It couldn’t come at a better time. Just yesterday, UCLA attributed the dramatic rise in childhood obesity to soda consumption. With this in mind, the kids involved with Jovenes Sanos have been asking schools to reduce the cost of bottled water for students and to ensure that all their drinking
fountains are working. The group is also approaching supermarkets, asking them to replace the candy selection near checkout with fresh fruit at least once a day. Read more at the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
