Maurice Ainsworth woke up behind bars again this morning at the Santa Cruz County Jail.
It wasn’t what he planned when he launched his failed escape attempt earlier this week. Maurice Ainsworth woke up behind bars again this morning at the Santa Cruz County Jail. He was transported back there on Wednesday morning after spending time in a secure medical facility, where he was held after ingesting prescription medication he apparently took from the house he invaded. The authorities have not determined whether he took the meds to commit suicide or get high.
Police also expect that charges could come as early as today for a number of crimes Ainsworth committed during his escape. The delay until now was the result of a continuing investigation of what exactly happened during the course of the incident. He will likely be charged with assaulting a deputy and the preschool teacher, burglary, and even attempted homicide. During his escape attempt, Ainsworth shot at a woman who attempted to aid the downed deputy. The charges will be added to the life sentence he already faces for a 2009 home invasion.
