Derrick Burch is your typical dirty old man, but not in the traditional sense of the word. The 53-year-old sex offender was physically filthy and needed a place to wash himself. Not having access to a bathroom or a shower, he did the next best thing. He decided to use a public restroom to give himself a bath. The problem is that the restroom he chose was in the Center Street police station.
A man visiting the station with his two young children decided to visit the restroom at the same time. That’s where he encountered Burch, standing there butt naked and giving himself a wash. Fortunately for him, it was a police station, so it didn’t take long to find a policeman. The officer entered the restroom and asked Burch what he was doing. “I’m taking a bath,” he said. The policeman suggested rather firmly that Burch put his clothing back on. Burch was then booked into county jail for failing to register as a sex offender and for suspicion of battery for an attack that took place in San Lorenzo Park on Oct.18.
When asked about the incident, SCPD spokesperson Zach Friend said, “There are better places to bathe than the police department’s bathroom.” Read more at the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
